Poem ~ Walking towards Halloween

Walking towards Halloween

Autumn arrived
with a good slapping
of wind and rain
but today the sky
is a perfect blue,
the sun a gift,
under which even
the Halloween decorations,
draped over doorways
and across gardens,
seem quite benign:
skeletons, giant spiders
and their webs, and,
my favourite, this
shrouded creature
designed to scare us
to our own bones,
because, after all,
which one of us,
on one of those days,
hasn’t felt like rushing out
into the garden to have
a damn good scream.
