After a tropical summer
we are now walking
through an autumn
that is more like
our usual summer.
We keep the windows
open at night, get up
to close them when
the early morning’s
chill slips through.
In the woods today
fallen leaves compete
with the persistence
of green, remind me
of the dichotomies
we must all accept
if we are to keep hold
of any inner peace:
life/death, love/hate,
what is found and lost.
I am grateful for
days like these, the light,
the scent of woodsmoke,
a squirrel that stops
to stare at me, as if
it has no fear at all,
a tractor driver who
slows so the track’s dust
does not envelop me.
These gifts. My rich life.
